The Island Coast Gators and their new coach have a new trophy to show off. The Gators rolled past Ida Baker 36-13 Friday night in the inaugural Cape Coral Crosstown Showdown.
Coach Wayne Blair's Gators squad put together a dominating second quarter to take control at Bulldog Stadium. The victorious coach wasn't satisfied despite the result in his debut at Island Coast.
"We've been sitting since spring," Blair said. "We really haven't had time to work out those kinks. ,The first game is always full of mistakes. We're going to try to work on that. Get to the drawing board tomorrow and start working toward Riverdale."

Ida Baker couldn't control the Gators on the ground on Friday. Island Coast ran for 227 yards in the first half alone, accounting for three touchdowns. It could have been more. Van Edwards' spectacular, tackle-breaking 61-yard scoring run was called back by a penalty.
The Gators struck first. Antonio Greaves' 26-yard run capped a drive kept alive by a roughing the punter penalty on Ida Baker.
Sage Attwood used both his legs and arm in getting Ida Baker on the scoreboard. He hit Rasheed Golden with a 29-yard TD pass to cap an 80-yard drive that tied the game at 7-7.
The second quarter was all Island Coast.
Greaves and Zelan Lambert provided the yardage on a 85-yard scoring drive that took up more than seven minutes. Lambert finished the drive with a 6-yard run.
Island Coast's defense then made two big plays to set up Gators scores.
Ida Baker fumbled on its next possession, setting up Kory Curtis' 33-yard scoring pass to Marlon Gaymon. Maurice Flournoy added a two-point conversion.
Zach Lackman intercepted an Attwood pass on the next play from scrimmage. Edwards carried the ball three times from there, scoring on a 12-yard run to give the Gators a 29-7 lead.
Greaves finished with 141 yards and Edwards 105 on the ground.
"Back-to-back plays, it snowballed on us," Ida Baker coach Brian Conn said. "Really, on both sides of the ball, I thought they were the more dominant team. Especially up front. They had a physical brand of football tonight."
Curtis and Ryan Pulley connected on a 37-yard scoring pass for Island Coast early in the fourth quarter.
The only thing that stopped the Gators was the penalty flag. Island Coast was flagged 24 times, with 22 penalties accepted against the Gators.
Jhshod Thornton scored on a two-yard run for Ida Baker's second TD. The extra-point attempt was blocked.
Island Coast's defense intercepted Attwood three times on the night.
"I think the one thing for us is not to be satisfied," Blair said. "We have a lot of kinks to be worked out. As far as the penalties, those are going to be worked out over this nice, long Labor Day weekend."
Cape Coral Rotary Club, sponsoring the Crosstown Showdown, provided $500 scholarships to seniors Mason Boye of Island Coast and Zach Yankovich of Ida Baker.
"It was a dog fight," Boye said of Friday's game. "At the first we hit hard, kept hitting hard. The third quarter was kind of rough, but in the fourth quarter we picked it up and locked it down."
The start of Friday's game was delayed a half-hour by lightning a week after storms canceled both teams' preseason contests.
