NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Atlantic Sun Conference Championship softball tournament begins Wednesday with No. 3 seed Stetson facing No. 6 seed FGCU in the opening game at 4 p.m.

No. 4 Mercer meets No. 5 Kennesaw State in the second game at 6:30 p.m.

FGCU (31-24-1) is battling to advance to the second round on Thursday against No. 2 seed Lipscomb while the Mercer-Kennesaw State winner take on top seed USC Upstate. Upstate (22-2 A-Sun) earned its first No. 1 tournament seeding by winning its second regular season championship.

Tournament play continues Friday and Saturday.

Working against the Eagles this week is the fact they won just seven of 20 games on the road this season while compiling a 14-13 conference record. They last won the conference title in 2012. Kelsey Carpenter holds the league's top batting average of .433 which ranks her 23rd in the country this season.

Three Eagles players earned A;;-Conference honors announced Tuesday. Carpenter, a junior, and senior Chelsea Zgrabik are first-teamers while senior Jessica Barnes was named to the second team.

"Congratulations to all three players for their selection to the all-conference team," said Eagles coach David Deiros. "Each of the three was instrumental to our success this season. We went as they went and I can't be any prouder of their performances this season."

The last time the host school won the conference softball title was Stetson in 2007.
