Taking the news media to task

February 2, 2013
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

To the editor:

I think that it is disingenuous for the news media to chide Sheriff Mike Scott and other sheriffs for their position regarding the new proposed laws governing firearms. Where was the news media when the Obama administration was refusing to uphold federal law regarding illegal immigrants in Arizona and the nearby states? It was Sheriff Joe Arpaio, in Arizona, who had the gumption and support of the people when he began enforcing the immigration laws. And what did the Obama administration do in response? The administration went after the sheriff! The U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder was filing charges against the Arizona lawman for upholding the federal law that Mr. Holder was sworn to uphold.

It is in the best interest of the people that the news media be more centered in political arguments. The First Amendment is a powerful guardian of the rights of the press. The press should equally be a powerful guardian of the rights contained within the other nine Amendments in the Bill of Rights. The need for accurate and unbiased news reporting is critical if the people are to be informed of all the issues so that they can make an informed decision at the ballot box.
