Phyllis Marie Johnson, 88, a resident of Cape Coral, died Saturday Jan. 19, 2013. She was born in Kalamazoo, Mich., and lived most of her life in Kalamazoo and Middleville, Mich.
She is survived by her brother, Norris Layton of Traverse City, Mich.; daughter, Dr. Patricia Joy Johnson (J. Dewey) Brown of Richmond, Va.; two sons, Dale Morris (Gail) Johnson, of Marion, Mich., Chris Norris (Dawn) Johnson of Cape Coral; seven devoted grandchildren; Christine Johnson of Twin Lake, Mich.; Jon Johnson of Kalamazoo, Mich.; Eric and Alex Johnson of Lansing, Mich.; Amy Johnson of Plymouth, Mich.; Patrick and Chris Brown of Richmond, Va.; four great-grandchildren and three nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Morris A. Johnson, and son, Gary Johnson of Fort Myers, Fla.
She was a dedicated mother and grandmother who guided a busy and vibrant household of children and her parents. She found joy in helping other people and loved to host international visitors from all over the world. She brought the world to her family and loved to travel when she found time. She was a farmer's wife and agriculturalist; community 4-H leader for over 40 years; alumna of Michigan State University Agricultural Short Course Program and volunteer community leader in many civic organizations throughout her lifetime. She won numerous awards and honors for her life of service to others. She was an inventor and had an official patent for her development of a Children's Safety Harness.
A celebration of life is being planned in Michigan this summer. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Grace Church Costa Rican Mission Team (13 S.E. 21st Place, Cape Coral, FL 33990) or the Michigan 4-H Foundation (240 Spartan Ave., East Lansing, MI 48824).
