Are we missing the point?

To the editor:

The recent tragic event in Connecticut has caused a national outcry to address gun control. It plays well to those who have a passion to eliminate or seriously control the Constitutional right of the people to keep and bear Arms. Some say that this Amendment is vague and out of date; others are overacting and just buying into the media. On the other side there are those who fear that once we start with limited control of certain guns it will result in the continuing elimination with the government gaining more serious power.

Lost in this passionate outcry is, in my view, the most serious cause of this unbelievable carnage of killing. I would guess most citizens have little idea of the violent video games which is all about killing, the rap music with hidden messages of sex and violence including killing, and the movie industry producing violent use of guns, sex and killing. The money producing this violence is directed to the youth and it pays because to them, it's cool and sells. Isn't the result acting out the product of violence? The bad guys become the hero.

We have come a long way from when the movie industry had little nudity, women had to have one foot on the floor sitting on a bed, and Jack Parr got in a lot of trouble using the word "water closet" which meant toilet. Can we say reality has gone too far? Foul mouth, lack of respect and responsibility is the result of modern culture. What's wrong with being nice, doing nice things and being respectful of those of all ages?

Gee, am I missing the point, or am I missing the way it used to be going to the movies and feeling good and feeling safe no matter when I went? Life should be simple and fun.
