"Many of us realize that this is just a knee-jerk reaction to the school shooting in Connecticut" How dare those liberals want to protect American lives? That's...un-American. It's clear, Mary, you are unaware that the US had a 10-year ban on assault weapons earlier. Too, you didn't realize that conservative President Ronald Reagan signed legislation that banned private ownership of an entire class of weapons and, unlike the earlier assault weapons ban, Reagan's ban is forever. I'm guessing that Fox news didn't mention that, and you should change the channel.

Schizzle: The second amendment is one line but a two part line. A well regulated militia is one part. The right of the people to keep and bear arms is the second part of it.

I love these attitudes - "The facts don't matter as long as she agrees with me." Really? Really?

Grump, the entire Second Amendment is "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Use that Google thing on your computer and let me know if you find the "second part."

I don't trust the gun stealing radicals on the left as much as the tea party radicals on the right. Both sides misunderstand the Constitution.

Schizzle: you quoted what I believe is the second amendment to the Constitution. It is a 2 part amendment. Any citizen has a right to keep and bear arms and that right shall not be infringed upon. It has nothing to do with the part about a regulated Militia. Something that many do not know. Anyone who has served in the military can be recalled, no matter the age they are, if it is deemed necessary. the ages that are in the selective service law do not count when it becomes necessary for the govt. to recall former military that are neeeded. As for Mary's figures. I believe she got her point across, even if the figures are wrong.

A constitution that can be changed by executive order, regulation, or a few judges is no constitution at all. If you think disarming the citizens that live under a heavily armed government will keep you safe, you’ve got off on the wrong ramp and ended up in a very dangerous neighborhood. Even if Ms.West has her facts wrong, if she is armed I’m with her.

Poor Mary. She's so confused. First of all, the population of the US is 311 million (not 300,000) and, if you count every single gun, the number of guns in the US is over 350 million (not 270,000). Misinformation such as this is not only dangerous, it's scary. It also gives one pause when reading the rest of your letter.

Here's the second amendment in its entirety: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Guess you missed the "well regulated" part, since you're so determined that there be no new regulations or any regulations at all.

Maybe you're one of those poor, misguided souls who are opposed to anything and everything the President proposes. So that makes it okay to throw out crazy, non-sensical numbers and contradict yourself over and over again. If President Obama suggests it, it's wrong, it's dangerous, it's socialism and it must be opposed and qu
