Lockman, do you believe everything you read? You got a piece of propaganda in the mail and take it as the truth? Have you done your own research to find out if those salaries are accurate? Have you done research to find out what is included in the "other" pay? Have you done research to verify the city pays for meals? Hint: the city may pay for meals for council members and their wives but they don't pay for meals for police and fire employees.
As for the gap, maybe the answer is as simple as the majority of residents don't want public safety outsourced. This group has a hard time understanding that the majority of the community really don't want what they want.
Slicethis, I have a list of 28 P & F making an average of $108k a year. Fire chief and union pres. say they have to lay off 21 of the "new hires". That way they can keep the $108k guys. Now, that does not include what the City pays for pensions, health insurance, vacation, Kelly Days, sick days, tools, uniforms, meals, and more!!! Don't depend on News Press lists. Get City public records on the top 28, highest paid P & F. You can have 4 new guys on the street for only one of the 28 bigs.
to get the huge gap between looking at outsourcing and NOT looking at outsoucing a lot of people would have had to state their choice more than once. now just who do you think could/would have their union members over and over again since there does not seem to be anything incorporated into the poll to stop anyone from doing so. those who vote legitimately are only voting once.
Those who think that it's OK to get rid of Fire while retaining Police are totally misinbnformed and confused. Neither are expendable. I suggest that you read what the Fire Department does most.. *******capecoralcivicassociation****/april_2009.pdf In 2008 70% of FD calls (about 12,000 were for emergency medical services). Our ALS (Advanced Life Support) is second to none and it saves lives.
Lockman, you are grossly misinformed. I do not know of a "Street Officer" whose take home is $108k. Or a Sergeant who takes home $106k. The wages are public record on the news-press, take a look for yourself. We need to support our police and fire and not outsource!

Wanna hire a Sheriff's Sergeant, who is asking for a $19,000 INCREASE in pay? Their whole department's pay is already much higher than CCPD. They also get free health insurance (Oh, maybe it's gone up to $10 - I forget), and they even have their own Health Clinic at their disposal. Cape pays $600 - $800 for their families insurance every month. I'm for keeping our own "Protect and Serve" right here. :|
Yes, the Lee County Sheriff runs Lehigh and it's like the wild west. They have enough to do. Support the Cape Cops with Auxiliary Police. I'll Join. Do not out source, Larger cities do it and the Cape Can do it until things get better. Listen I'm in the SW Cape off Chiquita, cars are getting broken into every night.
I was a law enforcement officer for 32 years, and I look at the leadership of both the Cape Coral Police and Fire departments and all I can think of is Porky Pig X 2. They need to get in shape if they want to be considered Professionals.
I'm somewhat of a newcomer to the area...moved here two years ago. When I relocated, there was a hot controversy regarding the new, $30 million police station. I'm more than a bit puzzled why the station was built and, less than two years later, consider outsourcing the police service. A stellar example of leadership!
Critics are like eunuchs in a harem. They're there every night, they see it done every night, they see how it should be done every night, but they can't do it themselves Brendan Behan
For those who have been paying attentiion, a gentleman from Estero drove up and spoke in front of councel about privitizing. Mulual aide goes out the window. If the private dept needs help other departments police and fire will not respond.
You are all misinformed. You are throwing out numbers that are very deceiving. Your "other pay" is their health benefits that is required to show as income. The officers never see this money. In addition there is some funds that are for specializations that require on call 24/7. I bet you would not want to be on call 24/7 for your job without being compensated. for major holidays, they were paid time and half not double time like most jobs do. (These are not bank holidays either.) Ironically, what you are not hearing is they have actually given it up in the contract negotiations along with their holiday pay, etc. Yet the city wont even look at them. Shame on all of you for buying into this crap. Secondly, overtime has to come into play due to emergency situations that hold these officers over the already 12 hour shift. It also includes court time. The guys that keep you safe all night long from 6pm to 6am then have to attend court for the cases they are working. Thus
You guys are completely delusional. A street cop gets a (frozen) base salary of just over 41K. That's for a job that they may get shot 3 times for, and they ASKED for this job so you could sleep soundly in your beds at night. Stop throwing completely BS numbers out there just cause your desperation over Tuesday is showing.
When a Police Field Officer has a base pay of $60,103 and gets an additional $48,000 in other pay plus overtime $387.00 for a total of $109,008.00 there is something wrong! The Cape's per Capita Income is about $21,500 for the person paying these high salaries!
Police Sergeant Salary $77,188; overtime $12,381; “other pay” $16,702; grand total $106,272 and it all goes toward retirement. A street cop base pay $60,103, “other pay” $48,517 total $108,620! The “other pay” just keeps coming, no hours required. Where should the layoffs start? There is a list for that. Outsourcing? When you find a hole that burns taxpayer money and has a violent temper to boot … you betcha. Ask the violent ones to leave town too. Bad for business.
Why would this city have to look at privatization? Because as in practically every aspect that has surfaced until this current city council and city manager a lack of proper management has existed. The residents have provided the necessary equipment and as we now see salaries and benefits that far exceed what is fair. A 34 million dollar police dept budget topped again by our share of a county sheriff budget and a 25 million dollar fire department budget. If residential is kicking in 92% of the cost maybe it is time to dramatically increase the costs of 8% paid by the businesses in this city? Until the that is done Cape Coral, Florida will remain a city whose commerce is GOVERNMENT!
Why not take a look at outsourcing? It may cost the taxpayers a substantial less amount than we are currenting paying. It works for Bonita by having the sheriff doing it there, and it might work just as well here. Even if it only saves the taxpayers 10%, that surely is better than what we are paying now. You pennypinchers will flock to the gas station that offers gas 2 cents less than another, but some of you don't bat an eye at paying many bucks more for a cop. Forget the pennies and take a look at saving bucks instead. Or do you have soooo much money to throw away instead?

Do we really want a police and fire department whose main goal is the financial 'bottom line'; or do we want dedicated professionals on the job?

Currently, wage and benefit packages for public employees are devastating to taxpayers. This is nationwide.
With employees retiring at an early age the government agency could end up concurrently paying those costs for 3 generations of employees.
Outsourcing would shift those costs and headaches to the private sector.
No one ever stated public 'service' benefits were a sacred right.
Public service was intended to be voluntary until the socialists (the unions) arrived.
