Ask Marilyn: Are Vitamin Supplements Safe?

Marilyn: I have been taking multivitamins for more than 50 years now, and I'm cancer-free. My doctor recently told me to stop taking them because—according to him—they can cause cancer. It seems to me that if this were true, then they would have been removed from store shelves by now. Is there any evidence that multivitamin supplements can cause cancer?
I have never seen any evidence to suggest that garden-variety multivitamin or multimineral supplements are not totally safe, and I would be flabbergasted to learn otherwise. (And yes, I take them myself.) That said, I'm sorry to note that your assumption about store shelves isn't correct. We know for sure that cigarettes can and do cause cancer, yet they are freely sold.
