Ask Marilyn: A Jar for Shared Expenses
Jake S. in Pinole, California, writes:
Marilyn: My partner and I put an equal amount of money in a jar for shared expenses. If she spends $5 of her own money for an item that's meant for both of us, how much money is she entitled to take from the jar to be compensated? I say $2.50, and she says $5.
She should take $5 from the jar.
Look at it this way: Say that she didn't use her own money. To buy the item for the two of you, she would have taken $5 from the jar. So the amount left in the jar would go down by $5. That's the same as reimbursing herself with $5 after she spent her own money.
