Even though high school athletic seasons were cut short and the future unclear, local teams have found a way to stay active and involved during coronavirus restrictions.

Cape Coral High School's cross country and track & field teams have organized the "Seahawks Summer Scramble" -- a virtual 5K race where proceeds will benefit the CCHS Activities & Athletics program.

Robert Berkey, the school's cross country and track & field coach of eight years, thought the virtual 5K would be a great way to get his student athletes involved with their craft and raise funds for the upcoming season.

"I figured our team, our kids love to run, and even though we can't necessarily be training together right now, it's a great thing to get ready for the upcoming fall season and get behind a common cause," Berkey said.

Berkey and Athletic Director Thomas Kenna have also tried to bring in other sports teams in the school and even the community to participate and get involved.

The race takes place over the weekend, beginning June 12 and ending June 14.

Participants do not have to run the 5K all at one time, but can spread it out and log miles wherever they would like while following public health guidelines.

Registration for the event is $25 and ends May 29 at 11:59 p.m.

Families can also register their child for the 1-mile Fun Run for those 10 and under. Registration is $10 for the Fun Run with the same deadline as the 5K.

"We're hoping it will be a weekend where everybody gets out there and does their own little 5K," Berkey said. "I'm just trying to encourage my student-athletes to get the community involved and find unique ways to do a community 5K at a bit of a distance."

The kids are ready to get out and stretch their legs as well.

"They seem to be really excited about it," Berkey said. "They're ready to get back to as much normal as we can. They're pretty appreciative of it. They love to get out and run and perform for their family, friends and school."

Berkey is hopeful the fall will render a season for his student-athletes, as the Florida High School Athletic Association has not made any formal announcements as of yet.

"My hope is that we're back," he said. "I feel that we're moving in that direction. I'm all in with the kids. I love them and doing this with them. We're ready to rock and roll and ready for a full season."
