South Cape Takeout Weekend offers options

April 2, 2020
By CJ HADDAD (cjhaddad@breezenewspapers.com) , Cape Coral Daily Breeze

Craving your favorite food or beverage but don't want to make a grocery store run and then have to hit the kitchen?

This weekend, establishments in Cape Coral's "downtown" are joining forces to present the South Cape Takeout Weekend, where orders can be brought right outside to you and placed into your car with no contact -- or even delivered with no contact. This is a takeout, "to-go" event organized by Big Storm Brewing Co.

"We are simply asking the community to come together during this difficult time and support those in the local hospitality industry by ordering out," said John Schroeder, Big Storm Cape Coral general manager.

According to the Nation Restaurant Association, the restaurant industry is projected to lose $225 billion in revenue and up to seven million jobs over the next three months.

"We are really trying to be innovative so that we can support our employees. We know we can get through this together," Schroeder added.

The event runs both Saturday and Sunday and all participating South Cape Coral businesses will offer takeout, curbside pick-up and delivery.

"It's a great way for the community to come together to help support our local businesses during this hard economic time," said Kerry Krieg, chef/co-owner of Merrick Seafood and Fish Tale Grill.

Krieg said recent weeks have taken a toll on the restaurant and marketplace they have on Southeast 47th Terrace.

They've had to cut their staffing and are doing curbside pick up, delivery as well as specials during this time.

Krieg hopes the community can come out and support some of the businesses, especially restaurants, this weekend and beyond.

She said it's hard to see employees who live paycheck to paycheck during this time and hopes movements like these help them during a difficult time.

Krieg said they are taking great sanitary precautions in their marketplace, kitchen and to-go orders.

For the first time in Big Storm's history, the brewery is now delivering its award-winning craft beers right to local homes. Big Storm is taking orders online, for four packs of beer, 1/6 kegs, coffee, merchandise and soda. The delivery fee is $5 and must be within a five-mile radius from Big Storm's Cape Coral taproom.

Those placing orders this weekend are encouraged post pictures of your food and drinks tagging the local business you are supporting along with the official event hashtag #southcapetakeoutweekend2020.

Another local brewery, Eight-Foot Brewing, is getting involved with curbside beer pick-up and takeout for food.

"I think it's huge for the community to support each other right now as small business owners," said Alexandra Phelps, co-owner of Eight-Foot with her husband, Roger. "It means a lot when we see businesses like Big Storm step up and say, 'Hey Cape Coral, lets support our small businesses in the area. Let's all come together and put on this kind of awareness event for small businesses.' I think that's very important for all of us to band together at this time and support each other when we're supposed to be at our peak season. Right now, we're all taking a hit."

Eight-Foot will also have select beers with upside labels on them. If you happen to get one of those beers with an upside label, you get a free four-pack (three additional beers) of any "clean" beer they offer.

Residents can order online and detail how they would like to pick up their meal or beer curbside from Eight-Foot employees.

Phelps is a nurse practitioner at an ICU and is screening her employees.

"We are sanitizing all of our cans, all of our bottles, our employees have all been screened," she said. "We're making sure everybody is practicing safe sanitary standards at the brewery and also at home. If they are in contact with someone who is sick in their family or are having symptoms, they are advised to stay home."
