Report: Ineligible athlete played for Oasis High football team

Three victories from current 7-1 season in question

What has been a dream season for Oasis High School football may be turning into a nightmare.

The Cape Coral Charter School Authority announced Thursday it had self-reported that Oasis had used an ineligible player for three games this season.

The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) had not made a statement on the situation as of late Thursday.

A message asking for a statement from Sharks athletic director Frank Haba was not returned.

If the FHSAA rules that Oasis must forfeit the three games in which the ineligible player competed, it probably means that a 7-1 record and a likely Class 3A playoff spot will melt away. Coach Mack Mitchell's team was rated seventh in the state in Class 3A, almost a sure thing to earn the first playoff berth in Sharks' history.

The school only learned this week that the player was not eligible.

Oasis held a meeting with parents Thursday afternoon to discuss the situation.

What is likely a shaken Sharks' team will have to gather itself for a today road game at Avon Park.
