Senior-led Cape team bounces Island Coast in volleyball

By PETE SISK (news@breezenewspapers.com) , Cape Coral Daily Breeze

Experience, and a hot serving game, carried the Cape Coral Seahawks on Tuesday.

A senior-laden Seahawks team swept a very young Island Coast squad 25-16, 25-15, 25-12 on the Gators' court.

Coach Cody Dunn's team sent out five seniors and a freshman to start Tuesday's match. The starters for Island Coast coach Erica Reich were two freshman, three sophomores and a junior.

Cape Coral had the edge in both size and experience.

"Experience and size were key," Dunn said.

Cape Coral had runs of seven consecutive points in the second game and 14 in the third. Island Coast had a 6-0 run later in the third before the Seahawks put the game and the match away.

"Our girls fought all the way through," Reich said.

But what really made the difference in the match was Cape's service game. Sophia Modica, the freshman, had six aces. Trinity White had five aces, and Angie Rosas and Emma Roy added three each.

Modica also had 16 assists and Roy seven kills. Maddie Morehead contributed 10 digs.

"The first game we had a few errors in the beginning, but we called the first time out and they really dialed it in," Dunn said. "The servers were hitting it good."

Cape Coral, 4-3 overall, got a win in its first District 5A-8 contest. Island Coast (0-4) is 0-3 in the district.

Despite the loss, Island Coast showed signs of improvement. The young Gators battled, and won their share of long rallies, although eventually the Cape was too much.

"The girls have been working really hard," Reich said. "We're showing a lot of improvement. We still have a lot of things to work on.

"We have a young team, mostly freshmen and sophomores, so it'll be as building effort."

Emma McWilliams had 10 assists for Island Coast. Lacey Passmore had five kills and Hannah Slutz four kills.

"I was very impressed," Dunn said. "I hadn't seen a couple of those girls before. They can pass the ball. We were hitting hard at them, and they were doing pretty good. It's very impressive what they've got going on.

"For our first district match, I was happy to come away with the win."
