City should purchase old church site for a park

To the editor:

An Open Letter to the Mayor and Cape Coral City Council regarding the former Christ Lutheran Church Property in Cornwallis:

My family has resided and paid taxes in the City of Cape Coral since the 1970s. Our local neighborhood association in Cornwallis approached the city well over a year ago asking they help purchase the Christ Lutheran Church property to create a neighborhood park. The Church was faced with foreclosure due to the 2009 banking crisis.

The property consisted of a memorial garden, mature trees, a pond with a fountain, lush landscaping, flowers, a preschool, a large church, an entire school and full playground-with equipment that would normally cost a city $100,000 to purchase!

The site could have been utilized as a community center with art classes, dance, gardening and other activities. The site could be a pocket park for our neighborhood, a place where grandparents and families could walk and bring their children/strollers to play. Purchasing the property would have been about enhancing the quality of life, giving us a greenspace, as well as property values for those of us who have paid our taxes for decades to this city.

This past month the church adjacent to Del Prado was bulldozed. The school and playground, as well as some of the green space of the property, has not been razed... yet. I urge the Cape Coral Mayor and City Council to immediately purchase the remainder of the school and playground/greenspace part of the property from the current owner/developer. We, taxpayers, have no park within walking distance in the Florida heat in our neighborhood and we need parks like this.

If the park is not purchased, myself and others will take our disappointment and frustration to the polls to elect those who will listen.

Sincerely,

C.A.Hughes, MSW
