Roadwork closes segment of Coronado

Drivers who use Coronado Parkway to get to the South Cape will need to find another way to get there for the next few weeks.

A road resurfacing project has temporarily closed a section of Coronado Parkway between Southeast 47th Terrace and Southeast 47th Street. The closure affects both the northbound and southbound lanes of Coronado Parkway.

Work began Monday to complete the reconstruction of the base and subbase on the section of roadway between Southeast 47th Terrace and Southeast 47th Street.

Work is underway along Coronado Parkway. The project should be completed within three weeks.

Stephanie Smith, design and construction manager, said damage tends to occur when you dig into it to replace a waterline or do drainage work, for example.

"I don't know what caused base failures. We decided rather than repaving the road. We want to be sure the base is repaired so it rides smoothly," Smith said. "The contractors want to dig out and replace the existing material and can do that quicker if they don't have to deal with the traffic."

Smith believes the recent streetscape work done on Southeast 47th Terrace played no factor in the damage to the road.

The project is expected to take about three weeks, followed by milling and resurfacing of the road from Cape Coral Parkway to just north of Southeast 46th Street, which will probably occur during nighttime, Smith said.

During construction, businesses in this block will remain open to the public. Crews will maintain access to the businesses. Motorists are asked to be aware of traffic control signs, turn lane closures, and workers when driving through the work zone.

Motorists should seek alternate routes and allow extra travel time to avoid delays. The detour route will be marked with signs.

"We asked the contractors to put up message boards on Cape Coral Parkway. People use Coronado to bypass Del Prado and Cape Coral Parkway," Smith said. "We will do our best to reduce the detour time and ask residents to be patient while we do this work."

The cost of the project is $490,000, with a 10 percent contingency.

The funding for the project is part of the $6.5 million provided in the city budget each year for resurfacing. The resurfacing of this section of road was delayed from FY 2016 paving program knowing that the streetscape project involved extending a water line across Coronado, along Southeast 47th Terrace, and the city wanted to avoid damaging a recently resurfaced road, officials said.
