Cape animal shelter offers a double-up for Father’s Day

Does Dad have a soft spot for soulful eyes and a wagging tail?

Does his idea of a best friend include fur and whiskers?

The Cape Coral Animal Shelter is offering what might just be the purrr-fect gift for pet-loving dads this Father's Day.

Thanks to a generous donor, all contributions made in Dad's or "Grandpaw's" name will be matched dollar for dollar up to $10,000 to benefit the under-construction, no-kill facility set to open this fall.

Organizers say every little bit will help.

And if you're feeling a little more generous and looking for something more lasting than a card or yet another cool coffee mug or tie?

The Cape Coral Animal Shelter's fundraising arm is also selling bricks on which you can place Dad's name. For $150 you can buy a 4-by-8 paver, which lets you add three lines of text. For $250, you can buy an 8-by-8 paver, which allows you four lines to memorialize Dad.

If you want to go all out?

Well, naming rights are still to be had for the facility that has been a labor of love for its board and volunteers for more than five years.

With a landlease from the city and $1.8 million in donations pledged or in hand, the non-profit finally broke ground for its 7,756-square-foot facility out near Sun Splash last October.

The new facility - the first of its kind in the Cape - is on schedule and now nearing completion.

The Cape Coral Animal Shelter will include an intake area; kennel housing for dogs and cats; a reception and adoption center; medical, animal grooming and feeding areas; a play yard; and a retail sales area for products new pet parents might need after completing the adoption of their new furever friend.

Donations remain an ongoing need as the project is more - - much more -- than a physical plant.

The CCAS continues to work to develop a $500,000 fund for operational costs once the facility is up and running.

In addition, the organization still is outfitting its clinic space. The need continues for medical equipment, such as exam, X-ray and surgery tables, according to the CCAS website.

That is why donations, and sponsorships, are indeed welcome.

To make a donation that will go twice as far as part of the matching funds opportunity, text "Give" to 239-237-5418 or visit their web site at .

You can also find information on other donation opportunities there.

To all the dads out there, have a Happy Father's -- or "Grandpaws" -- Day this weekend.
