Three teens charged with grand theft, more

Three local teenagers have been arrested and charged for their alleged involvement in the theft of a pickup truck and a firearm, and several vehicle burglaries in the northwest portion of the city.

According to a report from the Cape Coral Police Department, on April 6, Cape officers responded to a call for service at 2609 N.W. 3rd Ave. in reference to a stolen pickup truck. The victim explained that his Ford F-250 pickup truck with construction and bee equipment in the bed of the vehicle was stolen overnight.

Police reported that the stolen vehicle was located and returned to the victim.

Then two days later, on April 8, Cape Police responded to 40 N.W. 26th St., in reference to a past occurred burglary and theft from a motor vehicle. The victim said he parked his work truck in his driveway on Friday and when he entered his truck on Monday, he noticed that his vehicle had been ransacked. Upon closer examination, he noticed that his Glock 43 handgun had been stolen out of his center console.

The next night, April 9, Cape Police responded to a call from a resident at 3404 N.W. 9th Terrace in reference to a vehicle burglary and grand theft. The victim explained that someone had entered his unlocked red 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan and stolen items from it.

Police detectives Adam Christenson and Daniel Costa from the Property Crimes Unit were assigned the cases and based on several pieces of evidence that were collected, to reportedly include photos and video of the suspects showing off their stolen '"loot," they were able to identify the trio of suspects.

According to the police, the detectives developed probable cause to arrest Cylis Shawn Martin, 16, of 1111 S.E. 13th Place, Cape Coral; Richard Phillip Randall III, 17, of 253 Rose St., North Fort Myers; and Elija Michael Velez, 16, of 711 N.W. 16th Place, Cape Coral, for the crime spree.

Martin was charged with grand theft of a vehicle and grand theft of a firearm.

Randall III was charged with grand theft of a firearm and 8 warrants for failure to appear.

Velez was charged with burglary to a vehicle, grand theft, grand theft of a firearm and possession of a firearm under the age of 18.

All were later transferred to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
