A ‘pint-for-a pint’

Pine Island blood drive a tribute to first responders

September 4, 2018
By ED FRANKS (efranks@breezenewspapers.com) , Cape Coral Daily Breeze

This Thursday, Sept. 6, the Blue Dog Restaurant and Barnhill Mar-ket are co-hosting a blood drive from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

During the summer months, blood donations drop but the demand remains the same. A blood donation helps a wide range of patients.

OneBlood's Big Red Bus will be on hand to collect donations.

"This is a thank you to our first responders," organizer DJ Ruscik said. "John, one of the co-owners of Blue Dog Bar and Grill, is a fireman with Cape Coral Fire Department and wants to make this blood drive a salute to all first responders."

The blood drive has been labeled a "pint-for-a-pint" blood drive because the Blue Dog Bar and Grill is offering a certificate for a pint of beer (or a non-alcoholic beverage of your choice) as a thank you for a pint donation. Plus, Barnhill Market will provide a certificate for a 10 percent off seafood market purchases. Both certificates will be good through the end of September 2018.

"Also, all donors will receive a free OneBlood Cancer Awareness T-Shirt and a wellness checkup that includes blood pressure, temperature, iron count, pulse and cholesterol screenings," Ruscik said.

There's more than one way to give blood. Let your blood type lead the way in targeting the best way for you to donate your powerful lifesaving gift. Most people are familiar with whole blood donation but there's also double red cell donation, platelet donation and plasma donation. Be sure to ask a OneBlood team member.

"So many of our first responders across the nation have been faced with unprecedented challenges in recent history," Ruscik said. "Many of them have lost their lives in efforts to save others. It's in the news almost every day lately and this is a wonderful way to thank them."

To reserve a time or sign up in advance, please stop by Blue Dog or Barnhill or call DJ at 239-910-3829.
