Senator McCain’s legacy

August 31, 2018
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

To the editor:

The late U.S. Senator John McCain was by no means an ordinary man. Born into a long line of U.S. Navy leaders, he suffered with grievous injuries through five years in North Vietnam's worst prisons. Upon his repatriation, he resumed his career, leaving the Navy to enter national politics.

McCain never sought to be remembered as a hero. He chose to be remembered as an average citizen who fought for the rights and the quality of life of other average citizens and for the ultimate betterment of our country. In these simple thoughts he sealed his legacy.

Senator McCain's message was to work together, to reason together, to empathize with those you've never met, and to patiently forge solutions benefitting us all, never class, party, power or privilege. Most of all, though his message was this: courage.

The world needs more like John McCain.
