Dunbar High student injured with knife

A student at Dunbar High School was injured with a knife during gym class after another student pulled the instrument during an altercation.

The injury was not life threatening and school personnel, including the deputy assigned to the campus, intervened immediately, Lee County School District officials said in a notice to parents.

"During a gym class, two students had an altercation," the notification states, in part. "One of the students had a knife and injured the other student. Administrators and our SRO took immediate action, confiscating the knife. Law enforcement has detained the student and is completing an investigation. The victim sustained a non-life threatening injury and has been treated."

No other details on the incident were available.

The district will deal with the weapons issue as per policy, officials said.

"As you know, providing a safe and secure learning environment is our top priority. It is Board of Education policy that any student who brings a weapon on school property faces severe disciplinary action."

The note asks parents for their involvement in keeping schools safe.

"As parents, you can help. Please take this opportunity to speak to your child about the importance of school safety. While peer pressure is great at this age, we want to encourage students to feel comfortable reporting any information they may have that could compromise their safety and the safety of others. Working together, we can maintain an environment where students are free to focus on learning."
