Cypress Lake’s fast start dooms Island Coast in opener

The lightning that pushed Island Coast's season opener back from Friday to Monday finally relented. Still, the Gators' season didn't open all that well.

Cypress Lake jumped out to a quick 26-6 lead Monday night, eventually rolling to a 54-14 win at Island Coast.

Kelsey Demps ran for touchdowns of 52 and 12 yards, and pulled in a 25-yard TD pass from CJ Shedd to propel the Panthers to victory

Demps' 52-yarder was a momentum-changer that changed the game for good.

It came right after the Gators had grabbed an early 6-0 lead. Jaelin Willis intercepted a Shedd pass and returned it to the Cypress Lake 33. Trey Irick took a handoff and took it 33 yards to the end zone on the next play.

Demps finished with 100 yards rushing on seven carries, all in the first half.

"They got the momentum and we couldn't find a way to stop it," new Island Coast coach Jim Wiseman said. "Hats off to them. They outplayed us. They outplayed us in the trenches and that was the difference.

"They allowed their skill kids to do what they can do."

Mistakes did in the Gators. Three fumbles led to two Cypress Lake touchdowns and a field goal in the first half. A high snap on a punt led to a safety and two more points for the Panthers. Early in the fourth quarter, Cypress Lake's Koby Moore intercepted an Island Coast pass and took it 30 yards to score.

"Rough night," Wiseman said. "We shot ourselves in the foot in the first half. Too many turnovers in our own end. We were on the minus end and trying to catch up. And we just could never catch a break."

Island Coast's 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter evaporated into a 26-6 deficit in the second quarter. Demps scored twice, 20 seconds apart, as Cypress Lake led by 20 with 9:09 left in the half.

Jason Joseph had the longest play of the night for Island Coast, racing 51 yards on a quarterback keeper in the third period. He also hit Demond Jeffcoat for a two-point conversion.

Panthers running back Chris Joseph's first carry of the game came in the third quarter. He took it 60 yards for a Cypress Lake touchdown.

Shedd took the spotlight in the late going, hitting Kyrie Savoy and Kayshawn Crosley for third-quarter touchdown passes. Shedd finished with 127 yards and three TD connections.

"We've just got to keep our heads high and go battle again," Wiseman said.
