Green Wave rolls over Seahawks

It wasn't the debut the Cape Coral Seahawks wanted. But at least it didn't really count.

Fort Myers dominated after a close start for a 43-10 win in the preseason kickoff classic between the cross-river rivals on Friday at Ida Baker High School.

The game was called after three quarters due to poor field conditions. A downpour before halftime turned an already sloppy field into a muddy mess.

New Cape Coral coach Dale More's Seahawks had their moments on Friday, but Sam Sirianni Jr.'s Green Wave won the night.

"That's how it happens. That's football," More said. "We had some injuries and the field conditions got a little sloppy, and it took us out of some of our game plan.

"I thought we played well in places and we've got things we've got to fix. And that's the beauty of this game," he continued. "It's a scrimmage, we are zero and zero.

"We open our eyes right now," he said. "We've got a long ways to go I'm excited about our chances this year."

Fort Myers unleashed a new spread, no-huddle offense.

Willie Neal ran for two Fort Myers touchdowns early, and third-string quarterback Carter Lane added two scores late. However, it was the second-string quarterback, Cole Ames, who had the big shot of the night.

Ames connected with a wide-open John Coleus on a 34-yard TD with 38 seconds left in the second quarter. Ryan Welsh picked up a bad snap on the conversion and ran it in for two points and a 22-10 Green Wave lead at intermission.

It was a huge change of momentum. Cape Coral had closed within 14-10 with 3:27 to go in the second quarter when Parker O'Dell connected with Jaydin Feliz on a 30-yard TD pass.

A driving rain began right after Feliz's score. There was no lightning delay, and the rain didn't last all that long. Still, the field became a nightmare for Cape in the second half.

The Green Wave put the game away by taking advantage of Seahawks' errors.

Fort Myers tackled the Cape punter in the third quarter, setting up Yasias Young's 10-yard scoring run.

A fumble gave Fort Myers the ball near midfield. Two major penalties helped the Green Wave reached the 1, where third-string quarterback Carter Lane ran it in for a 36-10 lead.

Another Seahawks' fumble put the Green Wave right back in business on the 10. Lane scored from the 3 for a 43-10 score.

Although Cape Coral was the host team Friday, the preseason game was played at Ida Baker.

Next Friday is the official season and home opener for the Seahawks, and it will actually be played at home.

The field at Cape Coral has not been used since the last game of the 2017 football season. The soccer and lacrosse teams played all road games last year, and Cape's spring football game was at Dunbar.

Freshly reseeded, the new grass will get its first workout when Cape Coral plays host to South Fort Myers this coming Friday night.

"Next week we get a true home game," More said. "It made it a little different experience having to come over here to play. Kind of like a bowl game I guess."

Before that, there's game film to watch.

"You get to see the mistakes that you made," More said. "And some of them are just so simple. So easy, and they're going to be easy to fix."

Neal capped a penalty-aided Fort Myers drive with a 6-yard keeper midway through the first quarter.

Cape drove down inside the 1 late in the period, but an apparent Adrien Canty TD was negated by a penalty. Jacob Jiminez kicked a 28-yard field goal for the Seahawks.

The Seahawks let Jiminez try a 42-yarder early in the second quarter but he came up just short.

Neal added a 1-yard keeper in the second quarter for a 14-3 Fort Myers lead.
