Lest history repeat

August 17, 2018
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

To the editor:

Having just opened my City of Cape Coral's annual assessments (taxes) for 2018 and can't help but feel that I, as a property owner, am getting mistreated by my local government by the constant increases in these assessments, especially the fire assessments.

The city is in a very active building period with structures being built all around the city which will result in massively larger tax revenues. The city will enjoy this increase in spendable revenue but isn't sharing this increased revenue with the property owners by reducing taxes. Their response is to increase our assessments.

The last time this occurred, many people lost their homes with large readjusting mortgages that triggered payments that home owners couldn't handle. Large increases in local tax rates caused by drastic increases in property values significantly fueled these foreclosures.

The fault is with the taxpayers, not the government. Keep this in mind when it is time to vote for our representatives. It appears that history may be repeating itself.
