Become part of the solution

August 17, 2018
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

To the editor:

Blue/green algae is pumped on a strict schedule to prevent the Lake Okeechobee dike from breaking. Approximately 40,000 people live below that dike. If the water were treated at the source, it would prevent the fallout heading both east and west toward the coasts. It would prevent the nutrients from becoming dessert for toxic red tide, causing the unprecedented destruction of wildlife in our Gulf and the Atlantic Ocean.

Many entities have created this problem, including all levels of government, businesses and homeowners. Anyone who lives in or does business in Florida is part of the solution, too.

Everyone who owns a home or condo should be turning to Xeriscape for our lawns. This will help us reduce the need for fertilizer and pesticides. Leaking septic tanks should be replaced and eventually eliminated totally.

I'm calling on every Floridian to help me in the solution to this pollution. Please join me in the fight for your clean water. We must be united in the mission: for us, for our children and for Florida wildlife. It is our duty.
