FMPD officer wounded in shooting

An officer with the Fort Myers Police Department was shot and wounded at approximately 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 21, on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard near Flint Drive.

According to a FMPD issued at 12:30 a.m., the officer was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital and underwent surgery. Information about the officer's condition is unavailable.

After the shooting, FMPD and Lee County Sheriff's Deputies closed all traffic on Martin Luther King from Veronica Shoemaker Boulevard east to Michigan Avenue. Earlier this morning, the road was reopened to traffic.

Lee County Sheriff's Office personnel are assisting the Fort Myers Police Department in the investigation.

A suspect is in custody at this time.
