A playground favorite most remember fondly as a kid is now arriving as an organized co-ed adult league in Cape Coral and Fort Myers.

FGCU grads Ryan Caviness and Tomas Baltazar are spearheading iKickballz LLC, a kickball league that will not just revive an after-school special for youngsters, but bring a fun way to meet new people in the community.

"We want to inspire a healthy and active lifestyle, as well as build friendships through the game of kickball," said Caviness.

"The idea came from me looking to create my own business that would appeal to both men and women of adult ages that would keep people active. I was sitting at home with my mom and told her I wanted to create something of my own and felt kickball would be appealing," he said of his start-up.

He said his mother Fiona came up with the iKickballz name and from there he bought the domain name, built his website and brought Baltazar in as his partner where they got approval to become a LLC.

"It's great to re-live the childhood game of kickball, as well as make new friends. It's perfect for guys, girls, couples; anyone can come play kickball and have fun," Caviness added.

You may have seen some signs around the city promoting iKickballz, which will start with leagues in Cape Coral as well as Fort Myers, with plans on expanding to Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa for the fall.

The season will start on June 12, and run for 8 weeks on Tuesday nights at Pelican Field.

Caviness is hoping to have plenty of kick-ballerz to fill out team rosters.

"We're looking to have 10 teams, around 160 players in total," he said.

Games will start at 6:15 p.m. and teams will play seven games with a bye-week scheduled. Each team will qualify for the playoffs.

A captains' meeting and league meet 'n greet will take place June 5 at league-sponsor Duffy's Sports Grill in Cape Coral

"We will go over the rule book with captains, what their role is for kickball captain and social captain. Duffy's will speak on what they will offer during the season, followed by last-minute registration and then meet 'n greet. This is when all players will come together and meet each other for the first time. Should be fun and drink specials will be available," Caviness said.

Duffy's Sports Grill of Cape Coral will not just be providing uniforms for the league, but will turn into the place to kick back following each game.

"We're going to open up our 'Club Space' for the league following games on Tuesday nights. We'll also have food and drink specials for league participants, as well as some fun games and one week we'll karaoke," said Drew Knauff, general manager for Duffy's.

"This is the right time of year to explore partnerships. We have a sports team concept at Duffy's and we found that iKickballz is a great up-and-coming league in the Cape. It's about supporting Cape Coral - and this league is all about the community," he added.

The league certainly is all about the community, as Caviness has plans to contribute to local charities in the winter off-season.

"Hopefully we can get a group of iKickballz members to have canned food drives, contribute to Toys for Tots and pursue any charitable contributions we can. We want to make it a family league," Caviness stated.

Registration is also available online at Regular registration is $65 until June 4 and late registration is $75 until the season starts. Caviness said enter promo code ccdailybreeze to receive $5 off your registration fee.

Pelican Field is located at 4020 S.W. 2nd Court in Cape Coral.
