Salary cap won’t drain the swamp

To the editor:

Several letters recently have praised Congressman Francis Rooney for his bill to create term limits for members of Congress.

But this bill is merely a salary cap of $1 which would allow the uber-wealthy like Rooney - who can afford to serve without a salary-to remain in office long after their so-called "term limits" are up.

In addition, researchers at the University of Missouri who studied term limits in state legislatures found that term limits don't replace career politicians with "citizen legislatures" - ordinary people serving their communities for a time and then returning to their full-time occupations. Instead, term-limited career politicians don't leave public office; they just run for the next-higher office, or the reverse, bouncing between legislative chambers or running for different office altogether.

In reality, term limits won't "drain the swamp." Just look at Rick Scott-another uber-wealthy politician now running for Senate after being termed out of the Governor's office. We don't need term limits, just a revised electoral system that doesn't allow wealthy businessmen to buy political office.
