Amira Fox: Exactly who we need

To the editor:

Long ago, former Senator, Supreme Court Justice, and signer of the Constitution William Paterson advised the citizenry to "look well to the characters and qualifications of those you elect and raise to office and places of trust."

As members of the Southwest Florida community, no more important choice confronts us then the upcoming election of our next State Attorney. The State Attorney for the 20th Judicial Circuit in Southwest Florida is a critical position. The State Attorney enforces our laws, safeguards our rights, protects the innocent, holds the guilty responsible, and promotes public safety. Effective leadership and administration over these responsibilities directly impacts the health and welfare of the community - its citizens and its businesses. We must choose wisely.

I am an attorney, a military veteran and a retired FBI Special Agent. As an FBI Agent I was assigned all over the U.S. and worked closely with many District and State Attorneys. I've seen the good, and the bad, and know very well the impact both can have on a community. When I was first assigned to the Fort Myers FBI office, I became involved in joint cases with the State Attorney's Office. It was there that I met Amira Fox. Over the course of the subsequent three years before I retired I found her to be compassionate, ethical, fair, firm and deeply dedicated to the people she serves. She is a strong leader, respected by her inter-agency colleagues, fiercely loyal to the rule of law, and loved by her employees. Amira Fox is intelligent, has amazing problem-solving skills, and is a sharp lawyer with unmatched experience as a prosecutor. Importantly, too, she is humble, kind, generous and caring. These characters and attributes are precisely what we need in our next State Attorney.

When I retired from the FBI, I was interviewed and subsequently hired to work for the State Attorney as a prosecutor. There, from the inside, I learned exactly how dedicated that office is to the community it serves. An organization is only as effective as its leadership. Throughout my 10 years of military service, I have worked with, and for, some of the most effective leaders our country has to offer. I saw much of the same quality of leadership in the State Attorney's Office. In leading their office, Steve Russell and Amira Fox emphasized integrity, respect, quality of work, loyalty to victims, fairness and service. This was evident in everything they did, and in everything they expected from us as prosecutors. Steve and Amira hire and train prosecutors who hold these values and they manage their office to achieve those goals.

In the next election, as a community, we must get out, vote and put the right person in that office. In my view, forged from decades of direct law enforcement experience and public service, Amira Fox is exactly who we need to serve as our State Attorney. She has already proven where her loyalties rest. It's with us. She will undoubtedly continue her already well-established dedication to us and our community.
