American Legion member Dick Thomas has delivered two "Flag of Heroes" to different organizations on Pine Island. The two flags were donated by Matlacha resident Margaret Bunting.

"The 'Flag of Heroes' was created to honor the emergency services personnel who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Flight 93," Thomas said. "It's called the 'Flag of Heroes' because it has all of the names of those who died in the attacks on 9-11."

One flag was delivered to the Pine Island Veterans of Foreign Wars on Stringfellow Road in St. James City, where it will be placed on display. The second will be on display at the Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Department Station #1 on Pine Island Road.

The “Flag of Heroes” pays tribute to all of the emergency service personnel and others who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and on Flight 93.

"We're very excited to receive the 'Flag of Heroes' and thank Dick Thomas and Margaret Bunting," Fire Chief Ben Mickuleit said. "The flag will be displayed in Station 1's bay as a reminder of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

"It's important that people remember what happened on Sept. 11, 2001," Thomas said. "I was to thank Peg Bunting for these flags that represent an important part of America's history and now they're a part of our island."
