The Cape Coral boys and girls won the Disrict 2A-12 tennis tournament Thursday at Three Oaks Community Park.

"It was great to finally get over the hump and win district," Seahawks girls coach AJ Gurgal said. "We've finished second to (Bishop) Verot the past two years, and I believe that this is the first time Cape has won the district title as a team in 15 or even 20 years. We accomplished the first goal we set out at the beginning of the year of winning districts, and are looking forward to trying to reach our next goal which is the state competition.

"We had some individual success a few years ago with players advancing to states at No. 1 singles, but it has been nice to see our program develop and consistently be competing for district championships as a team over the past few years," Gurgal said. "I'm looking forward to see how far we can make it."

Both Seahawks squads advance to the regional Class 2A semfinals Tuesday with home matches. Cape's girls face Lemon Bay, while the boys take on Bradenton Southeast. The matches will start at 3 p.m.

The regional finals are April 26.

"We have four seniors that have been runner-up at district the first few years, so it is great for them to get a district championship as a team," Cape boys coach Martin Jijon said.

Cape's boys No. 1 singles player Ian Ziegler and No. 1 doubles team of Matthew Orozco and Ziegler also locked up a spot in the state Class 2A tournament May 2-4 at Sanlando Park in Samford.

"Ian Ziegler won his second straight district title at No. 1 singles and his third straight district championship at No. 1 doubles; so he will be making his third straight state championships.

"Although we already have our No. 1 singles and No 1 doubles teams qualified for states, we hope we can get past the regional final and make it their as a team," Jijon said. "I think it would be the first time in Cape history that we would make it to states as a team."?The Cape Coral boys fell in the regional final a year ago.

Bishop Verot came in second in the girls' tournament. The Vikings take on Bradenton Bayshore on Tuesday.

"We have a tough road ahead of us, and have a chance of matching up with Verot again in the regional final if they win their semifinal match," Gurgal said.
