Unity focus of 2018 Community Prayer Breakfast May 3 at City of Palms Park

Southwest Florida residents are invited to attend the annual Community Prayer Breakfast in observance of the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 3.

Hosted by the city of Fort Myers, this year's event will be emceed by Mayor Randy Henderson and held at City of Palms Park, 2201 Edison Ave.. in Fort Myers. The national theme for the 2018 National Day of Prayer is unity.

The breakfast buffet begins at 6:05 a.m. and will be followed at 7 a.m. by a program that includes keynote speaker Rick Rigsby, a nationally acclaimed speaker, author and president/CEO of Rick Rigsby Communications. Rigsby is a former award-winning journalist, college professor, character coach and chaplain for Texas A&M University's football team.

The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance on the first Thursday of May, when individuals of all faiths join together in unified prayer for continued blessings on the nation. Every year, local, state and federal observances are held from sunrise to sunset across the nation and attract more than 2 million people. The Fort Myers community has been honoring the National Day of Prayer since the Community Prayer Breakfast's inception in 1988. Local businesses and organizations annually step in to support the event through sponsorships and donations.

Savvy Caregiver Program starts May 1

The Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer's Resource Center, in conjunction with Grace Church, will be hosting the Savvy Caregiver Program. These sessions will be held on Tuesdays, starting May 1, from 2-4 p.m. at Grace Church at 13 S.E. 21st Place, Cape Coral, 33990. Grace has offered to provide free respite, for loved ones with memory impairments, while those wishing to attend the course (advanced registration is required for respite). Respite includes important socialization, music, art and on occasion pet therapy. Snacks are also provided.

The Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer's Resource Center has also collaborated with Choices in Living Adult Day Care to offer an evening course of the Savvy Caregiver, for those who work. The course will be held from 6-8 p.m. on the same day as it is held at Grace Church.

Please note, respite will not be available during the evening course.

This educational program is designed to train family caregivers in the basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to cope with the challenges of caring for a family member with Alzheimer's disease or related dementia. Sessions are delivered in 2-hour increments over a 6-week period. There is no charge for this program and seating is limited. Please RSVP by April 27 by calling the Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer's Resource Center at (239) 437-3007. This program is made possible through a grant from the Cape Coral Community Foundation.

The Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer's Resource Center, a United Way partner agency, provides information, support, and education for individuals with Alzheimer's disease or related memory impairment and their family caregivers in Lee and Hendry counties.

The Dubin Center is located at 12468 Brantley Commons Court, Fort Myers.

Catholics Returning Home program continues at St. Katharine Drexel

No matter how long you have been away and no matter what the reason, Catholics Returning Home invites you to consider renewing your relationship with the Catholic Church.

Please join in for informal listening sessions and an update of the Catholic faith.

The sessions began Monday, April 2, at 7 p.m., and run through May 7. The group meets in the St. Katharine Drexel Faith Formation Building, 1922 S.W. 20th Ave., Cape Coral.
