Kids enjoy Kiwanis Fishing Derby

The 30th annual Kiwanis Kids Free Fishing Derby was held Feb. 7 at the Cape Coral Yacht Club, and a total of 119 fish were caught by the young anglers. Awards were presented in several categories. For Biggest Fish, the top prizes went to John Vanerstrom for the boys with a 14-inch fish, and Isabella Velazquez with an 11.25-inch catch. The Smallest Fish were caught by Spencer Simon, 2 inches, for the boys and Kassidy, 5 inches, for the girls. Vanerstrom also caught the most fish for the boys with seven and Jade Smith landed the most for the girls with 6. Vanerstrom also had the Most Unusual Catch -- half a fishing pole. Other "special" awards went to Tyler Onash, with the 30th fish caught; Velazquez, a 30-centimeter fish; and the 30th fisherman was Tray Graves.
