Support student non-discrimination

To the editor:

As a strong proponent of equal protection under the law, I have written to my members of Congress, Senators Rubio and Nelson, and Rep, Francis Rooney, to ask that they co-sponsor and support the Student Non-Discrimination Act. It prohibits discrimination against students in grades K-12 because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Since no federal law protects LBGTQ youth, this legislation would help make a positive difference in our schools. This is particularly true as locally, the Collier County school board removed specific language protecting LBGTQ youth earlier this school year, reportedly at the request of one of its members. I did some reading at the time and discovered that the removal of such protections is part of a nationwide religious-right effort to delegitimize LBGTQ student protections, despite the constitutional guarantees against the government enshrining any particular religions. Oh, yes, let's not forget the Equal Protection thing, too. At any rate, the Student Non-Discrimination Act is step towards providing protections for some of our most vulnerable students and deserves the
