A ninth grade student at South Fort Myers High School was arrested Wednesday after a loaded firearm was discovered in his backpack.

Christopher Salters , 16, of 3217 1 Jeffcott Street, Fort Myers, was arrested by a Lee County Sheriff's Office School Resource Officer, a release from the Lee County Sheriff's Office states.

"Salters was in an altercation yesterday with another student and had made verbal threats against that student," the release states. "Based on information learned by the deputy and school staff, an administrative search was conducted on the student this morning. A search of his backpack turned up the weapon. Salters was immediately arrested and handcuffed."
