Second amendment is not a blank check

To the editor:

I have given a lot of thought to the position of those who would continue to allow the possession of military style weapons by the average citizen. My reading on the subject leads me to believe that the Second Amendment does NOT give anyone the right to own any weapon anywhere they want. There are competing interests that must be balanced, just like any other right. I also have looked around for the well regulated and trained militia referenced by the Second Amendment. It's a myth.

So, I have written my members of Congress to let them know I SUPPORT pending legislation to ban assault weapons, like the military-style rifle that was used to murder 17 teenagers and educators last month in Parkland, Florida - and like the ones used in Newtown, Aurora, Orlando, Las Vegas and Sutherland Springs. Military style weapons belong only in the hands of the actual military and should be used exclusively for the purpose of national defense and homeland security. Ban them and ban the high capacity magazines and ammunition that makes such weapons so lethal.

Our lives depend on it.
