Put a Children’s Services Council initiative on the ballot

March 29, 2018
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

To the editor:

It is the responsibility of the Board of County Commissioners to guide the investment of our tax dollars for a better Lee County future. Citizens have the right to decide what services they feel are worthy. A Children's Services Council helps achieve more children kindergarten ready - currently in Lee County fewer than one third of all children are considered kindergarten ready -there is a waiting list of over 400 for Headstart programs. This is not a minority children, or immigrant children, or income challenged families, problem.

That is just the beginning of the list where we are failing our children. Teen birth rates, child abuse, juvenile crime, STD rates, childhood suicides all exceed state and national averages. Lee County children fall below state averages for reading at grade level, high school graduation, dental and vision care, available counseling services, and after school/mentoring programs. Every county with a Children's Services Council excels by comparison.

County Commissioners need to take action to put the issue on the ballot. There is no cost. There is no commitment to approve. There is the patriotic standard of letting citizens decide. Please contact all county commissioners and the county manager and tell them it is your decision, not theirs - put a Children's Services Council on the ballot.
