Mariner clips Lely to advance state soccer playoffs

The Mariner Tritons started slowly, but got the job done Tuesday night.

Cassidee Rentsch scored two second-half goals to lead the Tritons past Lely and into the second round of the state Class 3A girls soccer playoffs.

Up next is another showdown with North Fort Myers on Friday in a rematch of the District 3A-13 championship won by Mariner in overtime.

North went down to Naples and defeated Barron Collier 3-1 on Tuesday to set up the rematch.

Friday's match will be at Mariner.

"We were flat in the first half," Tritons coach Jami Hagy said. "Lely's a hard-working team and it's regionals now so you can't play flat. They all played harder in the second half."

Neither side made a serious threat to score in the first half.

Mariner (18-1-3) began to ratchet up its play a few minutes into the second half. Rentsch would score on a shot from the left of Lely goalkeeper Andrea Castillo with 28:12 to play.

Rentsch took advantage of a Trojans mistake to score the second goal. Castillo misplayed the ball, and Rentsch pounced on it and put into an empty net.

"All year she's stepped up big when we need her," Hagy said of Rentsch. "She's a shadow. We know that Taylor (Yount) scores the goals, but Cassidee has scored some really big goals for us this year."

"To me, that was a one-goal game," Trojans coach Jen Santiago said. "The second one was just a horrible mistake. It deflated us so much."

Lely (7-10-2) ended a decades-long drought by reaching the playoffs this season, and made Mariner work hard to survive and advance.

Mariner goaltender Acelya Aydogmus set a team record with her 18th shutout of the season.?"Shutout record for Acelya tonight," Hagy said. "I'm really proud of her."

The Trojans had some pride as well, knowing they both reached the playoffs and then gave Mariner all it could handle.

"We lost five seniors, three that started, and beyond that this is a young team," Santiago said. "We fought hard. I think we surprised some people. Next year a lot more will be expected of them."

Lely made the playoffs for just the third time since 1974, with the Trojans' last appearance coming in 2011.
