Be careful what you wish for

To the editor:

People want freedom. That sounds simple enough until we read or listen to a bit more.

There are those of self-determined gender that wish to marry. We can do that. Others want freedom of the press, as we enjoy here in the United States. Daily we hear from those who espouse freedom from violence! A bit dicey that. It is normal for people to want certain freedoms; however, not all of them are practical.

Take "freedom from violence". We could most likely all get onboard with this one. And this is usually part and parcel of those who pray for the "end of gun violence." Really? A nice thought or prayer but not going to happen in a world of human endeavor.

These various desires of ending something unfavorable can most likely be attributed to opinion. Some tout that guns commit violence: That by their very existence people are injured. Again, we must revert back to the original premise that people have different opinions. And as for violence, well the Bible has a way of dealing with all the proclivities of human nature. Cain killed Abel. The wonder of this act begs the question, where did Cain learn of such an activity? Violence is thus shown to be fundamental to our existence.

We live daily with the knowledge that we could at any time suffer violence in any of its many forms; some intended, others not.

So when we observe the word "freedom, what is it? Acting in some fashion without any restraint seems to fit quite nicely. But when we exercise a "freedom" we must also join hands with the attached responsibility. For that thought I sought out Sigmund Freud and he posits, "Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility.

We must be careful what we wish for.
