Miracle take two from Stone Crabs

After enduring two days of rainouts on the heels of a scheduled day off last Sunday, the Fort Myers Miracle finally got back on the field Wednesday for a doubleheader with the Charlotte Stone Crabs at Hammond Stadium.

The rain forced the team to face back-to-back doubleheaders to close out the current homestand leading up to the All-Star Game break this weekend. The Miracle (30-33) swept the Stone Crabs Wednesday 9-3 and 9-4 and were to do it all again Thursday - weather permitting, of course.

Four Miracle players were selected to play in Saturday's All-Star Game in Lakeland, led by catcher Brian Navarreto and pitchers Dereck Rodriguez and Sam Clay. Third baseman Chris Paul also was named to the team, but has been on the disabled list with a wrist injury since May 31 and might not be available.

After the weekend break, the Miracle play the final three games of the Florida State League's first-half starting Monday in Jupiter. They start the second-half next Thursday at the Florida Fire Frogs. They don't return to Hammond Stadium until June 27.

The Miracle used a five-run second inning and a four-run third to pull away from Charlotte in the opening game Wednesday night. After falling behind 2-0, a number of walks and timely base hits enabled the Miracle to take the lead. Trey Vavra supplied a two-out, two-run single followed by a Daniel Kihle's double that plated two more.

Run-scoring singles by Navarreto and Alex Perez in the third helped put the game out of reach.

After Charlotte scored three runs on four straight base hits in the top of the second, the Miracle plated four second inning runs to take a 5-3 lead. Max Murphy tied the game with a two-run double. Wiel added sac-fly and Vavra an RBI-hit of his own.

The Miracle broke it open in the fifth for Brady Anderson (3-2) when Murphy doubled with the loaded bases to open a 9-4 lead.
