South Cape Mardi Gras looking to double attendance

February 17, 2017

Those unable to make it to the Big Easy in the coming weeks can enjoy a local celebration.

Hosted by the South Cape Hospitality and Entertainment Associations, the 4th Annual South Cape Mardi Gras Trolley Event will take place on Feb. 25 from 7 to 11 p.m. at 12 participating venues. Each location will serve up a $2.50 speciality drink, while attendees have a shot at winning a gift basket.

"Mardi Gras is huge and most people aren't going to make it to New Orleans for the festivities," Pamela Hazelton, a spokeswoman for SCHEA said. "This is a way for people to participate."

Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 the day of the event.

Last year, about 500 tickets were sold.

"This year, we're hoping to get close to 1,000 people," she said.

Each attendee will receive a passport that they can get stamped at the venues. Once they have their entire passport stamped, they turn it in at any of the participating locations or to a trolley hostess.

The gift basket is filled with top-shelf bourbon, bar accessories, beads and feather masks.

Hazelton noted that Karma & Coconuts in the Cape made the masks.

"So they're truly unique masks that no one else is going to have," she said.

Trivia games on the trolleys provide another shot at winning goodies.

"A lot of trinkets," Hazelton said. "There'll probably be more (Mardi Gras) beads."

Trolley prizes also include gift cards from the participating locations.

A Mardi Gras photo booth will be set up in the lobby of the Dolphin Key Resort.

"We've found that a lot of people love to have their pictures taken when they go out to these events," she said. "We have a professional photographer come in. We have a backdrop with decorations."

Among the venues, the $2.50 drinks run the gamut. There is Cajun Lemonade, Canal Street Cruiser, Kings Purple Punch and Mardi Gras Kiss, to Pina Bomb, Beads On and Creole Bloody Mary.

"Most of them are Mardi Gras-themed," Hazelton said. "Some with a little more Cajun."

For example, the Cajun Lemonade will consist of rum, lemonade and hot sauce.

"So, that's going to have a nice little kick to it," she said.

"There's going to be a really wide variety," Hazelton added.

Check-in booths will be open from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Club Square, Big John Plaza and in the Dolphin Key Resort lobby. Late check-in is available after 8:30 at the Dolphin Key Resort or Dixie Roadhouse.

For $10, a Designed Driver ticket entitles the holder to free water and soda at each venue.

"Obviously, it's really important for people to get home safe," she said.

To purchase event tickets in advance, stop by any of the participating locations or visit online at: Designed Driver tickets are only available from BackStreets Sports Bar.

"It's going to be a lot of fun," Hazelton said.

"It's a great way to see what the South Cape has to offer," she added.
