Job fair Saturday Lee County Health Care Center in Cape Coral

The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System will hold a job fair at the Lee County Health Care Center Saturday, Jan. 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will take place in the lobby at the Lee County Health Care Center located on the first floor of the clinic, at 2489 Diplomat Parkway in Cape Coral. Parking will be available in the main parking lot.

The fair is open to all professionals seeking employment in the following occupations:

* Nursing (Registered Nurses Primary Care)

* Nursing (Licensed Practical Nurses, Primary Care)

RSW December passenger count

During December, 840,501 passengers traveled through Southwest Florida International Airport, an increase of 0.6 percent compared to December 2015. Year-to-date, passenger traffic was up 2.8 percent from the same period last year.

"December passenger numbers helped us reach a new record of 8.6 million passengers in 2016, making it the best year since Southwest Florida International Airport opened in 1983," said Jeff Mulder, A.A.E., executive director of the Lee County Port Authority. "We want to thank our airline partners who provide quality air service and the traveling public for choosing to fly in and out of RSW."

The traffic leader in December was Delta Air Lines with 166,006 passengers traveling to and from Fort Myers. Rounding out the top five airlines were Southwest (153,949), JetBlue (113,450), American (109,654) and Spirit (104,595).

Southwest Florida International Airport had 8,102 aircraft movements (takeoffs and landings), a decrease of 1.2 percent compared to December 2015. Page Field saw 8,685 movements, a 5.6 percent increase from December 2015. In addition, more than 3.8 million pounds of air freight moved through Southwest Florida International Airport in December 2016, a decrease 3 percent compared to December 2015.

Goodrich elected chair of airport advisory committee

The Lee County Port Authority Airports Special Management Committee elected John Goodrich as chair and Fran Myers as vice chair during its Jan. 17 meeting. Other members of the Airports Special Management Committee include Noel Andress, R. Scott Cameron, Dana Carr, Randy Krise and Robbie Roepstorff.

The committee advises the Board of Port Commissioners on policy matters pertaining to Southwest Florida International Airport and Page Field in Fort Myers. Each Port Commissioner appoints one ASMC member, who serves without compensation. The committee also includes two regional members, Cameron and Carr, who represent the interests of neighboring Collier and Charlotte counties.

Lee County Homeless Continuum of Care awarded $1,661,056 in program funds

The Lee County Homeless Continuum of Care, which includes local government, non-profit, and faith-based organizations, has been awarded $1,661,056 in federal funding, which will provide housing and services for Lee County residents who are homeless.

Eight programs are existing programs receiving renewal grant awards.

* SalusCare Inc. will receive renewal funding for two permanent housing programs.

* Community Assisted and Supported Living Inc. will receive renewal funding for two rental subsidy programs and two permanent housing programs.

* The Salvation Army will receive renewal funding for rapid re-housing, which will permanently house eligible families.

The 2016 awards total more than $1.95 billion nationwide. Funding for local Continuums of Care is provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and is awarded following a national competitive application process.

Mattress Firm stores to hold Pajama Drive for foster children

All 25 Mattress Firm stores in the Fort Myers area are hosting a Pajama Drive, the first of Mattress Firm Foster Kids' six 2017 donation drives to benefit local foster youth and families. Through Sunday, Feb. 12, during normal store hours, Mattress Firm will accept new pajamas and monetary contributions to give foster kids the comfort and warmth of a new pair of pajamas.

All proceeds will be donated to Children's Home Society of Florida.

Throughout the year, Mattress Firm Foster Kids hosts drives at its Fort Myers stores to collect essential items and raise funds to help thousands of local foster children. Donations from each drive will be distributed to partner organizations in the community.
