Dr. Mel Youngs celebrates 16 years of wellness in Cape

Dr. Mel Youngs, D.C., P.A., has announced that her chiropractic clinic and wellness spa is celebrating its 16-year anniversary this month.

Dr. Mel Youngs Chiropractic and Wellness Spa has been serving the area since Oct. 1, 2000. In that time, Dr. Youngs has expanded her practice to include two associate chiropractic physicians, massage therapy and skin care services, K-Laser therapy, weight loss services, a multitude of wellness products and more.

Harwood fosters community engagement at Juniper Village

Since June of this year, Juniper Village at Cape Coral has been under new leadership with the appointment of Ayla Harwood as executive director. Her hire brings skilled nursing and organizational leadership to the forefront of day to day operations at the assisted living community.

Harwood started in healthcare in 2010 as a CNA in skilled nursing and then became an LPN working in skilled nursing and home health. This opened the door for her to assisted living, where she quickly fell in love with this side of health care.

As the executive director, Harwood will continue to foster the programs that are in place. Top of these efforts are being sure all staff are educated in Juniper's culture of caring and showing staff appreciation.

Achieva Credit Union and Cape Coral Charter Schools partner for students

Achieva Credit Union recently announced a strategic partnership with the Cape Coral Municipal Charter School Foundation that executives expect to eventually raise thousands of dollars. For the first time, Achieva Credit Union has agreed to make a donation to the Foundation on behalf of any new member who joins the credit union and has an association or chooses to support the Charter School.

Achieva's individual donations will vary from $25 to $350, based on factors such as the types of products and services the new members select. There is no specified end date for the program though Lampkins hopes people will quickly take advantage of the program as there are several needs for the school.

Leaders from Achieva and Cape Coral Municipal Charter Schools have worked together over the past several months to develop this initiative. Known for its many fun community events to support public education, this initiative is the first of its kind. In addition to fundraising, Achieva employees are also volunteering to teach several financial literacy classes and working with elementary students to help them open their first savings accounts through a program called Kids Make Cents in the elementary schools.

Designer Purse Bingo at Fathoms rescheduled to Oct. 13

Due to safety of customers and staff due to the approach of Hurricane Matthew, Fathoms Restaurant & Bar has rescheduled its Designer Purse Bingo event to Thursday, Oct. 13, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event was originally set for Oct. 6.

Self-Serve Dog Wash, Grooming & Bakery to celebrates grand opening

Wash n' Wag, Self-Serve Dog Wash, Grooming & Barkery will be celebrating its grand opening Saturday, Oct. 15, with pet adoptions, a balloon artist and hot dogs.

The grand opening celebration will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on Oct. 15, at Wash n' Wag at 1751 N.E. Pine Island Road, Unit B3. Local pet adoption agencies will have pets available for those looking for a new companion. Kids will enjoy a balloon twister create animals.

Wash n' Wag offers everything needed to wash a pet, including elevated tubs with ramps, waterproof aprons, shampoo, towels, blow dryers, brushes, cotton balls, ear cleaning solution and other supplies. The self-service wash also includes a bakery with a variety of healthy dog treats.

Valerie's House notes sponsors for 'Under the Stars at Shangri-La'

Valerie's House, a Southwest Florida nonprofit devoted to providing support to grieving children, announces sponsors for its inaugural event entitled "Under the Stars at Shangri-La" to be held Thursday, Oct. 13, from 6-9 p.m., at the historic Shangri-La Springs Hotel, 27750 Old 41 Road, Bonita Springs.

Event sponsors include Cape Christian Fellowship Church, FineMark National Bank & Trust, HBK CPAs and Consultants, HBKS Wealth Advisors, Lee Health, Lee County Electric Cooperative (LCEC), LeeSar, Markham Norton Mosteller Wright & Company, U. Fire dancers, a calypso band with steel drum, and a live performance by a Valerie's House child singer/songwriter will provide entertainment for the special event. Valerie's House provides a safe, comfortable place for children to share, grieve and heal together following the death of a close family member. Team Depot helps out at Lifeline Family Center

On Wednesday, Sept. 21, Lifeline Family Center was honored to open its doors to Team Depot, a collection of giving Home Depot employees, as they arrived from across the U.S. to help with two kitchen rehab projects, valued at more than $52,000. Also contributing to the project with Home Depot were Deluxe Marble and Granite in Ft. Lauderdale and Thermovision Cabinets in Quebec.

Lifeline Family Center is a maternity home in Cape Coral for women (ages 16-22) in unplanned pregnancies. 2016 marks Lifeline's 20 year anniversary of serving southwest Florida. The 18,000 square foot complex includes two separate homes, plus a Learning Center, nursery, chapel, boutique and administrative offices. Lifeline can accommodate up to 12 moms, 24 children and three sets of house parents.

The Home Depot project at Lifeline focused on completely redoing two kitchens and required no grant application. Home Depot and friends refaced 37 linear feet of cabinetry, as well as replacing hardware, sinks and fixtures, plus granite countertops. And Team Depot didn't stop there.

As if the kitchens weren't enough, Team Depot also weeded the landscaping and spread 50 bags of mulch, in addition to painting 18 rocking chairs that adorn Lifeline's porch areas, thanks to Store Manager Mark Scott of the Hancock Bridge location.

Fifth Third Bank employees lend a hand at SalusCare

Employees of Fifth Third Bank recently volunteered at SalusCare for a United Way Day of Caring. SalusCare is a United Way Partner Agency.

At SalusCare's Colonial Campus, Fifth Third Bank employees added new plants and shrubs around the building, replaced mulch and power-washed entrances and walkways. They also repainted the building's lettering, making a clean and attractive exterior for the Triage Center.

The United Way's Day of Caring is a year-round program, coordinated by the United Way Volunteer Center which matches businesses' desires to help with the needs of the community. Many local groups and companies have participated such as Publix Super Markets, Cummins Power South, Lee Memorial Health System, Cypress Cove at HealthPark, and Comcast.

Dunkin's Diamonds to hold Move For Hunger food drive Nov. 1-15

Dunkin's Diamonds, along with Frank & Sons Moving & Storage Inc., will be holding a Move For Hunger food drive from Nov. 1-15, at all three of its locations: 11500 South Cleveland Ave., Fort Myers; Gulf Coast Town Center, 9903 Gulf Coast Main St., Suite B115, Fort Myers; and Miromar Outlets, 10801 Corkscrew Road, Suite H309, Estero.

Customers and residents of the community are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to any one of Dunkin's Diamonds locations. Everyone that brings 5 items will receive a 20 percent card towards their next purchase.

Frank & Sons Moving & Storage, a Wheaton agent, will volunteer time and resources to pick-up the donations and deliver them to the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida.

Fords Garage to soon offer Fort Myers-based American Barrels whiskey

Bourbon whiskey company American Barrels is growing rapidly throughout the southeastern United States. The brand is now sold in hundreds of locations from New York to Tennessee, including every Total Wine & Spirits in the state of Florida.

Twenty-five year-old CEO and Founder Michael Reed officially launched the company in August 2014, and has seen a steady rise in demand for American Barrels ever since.

The bottle itself pays homage to the two types of barrels that Americans hold dear - gun barrels and whiskey barrels. The bottom is encased in brass like a shotgun shell, while the top half is made of glass, designed with a snake wrapped around its length, recalling the snake found on the historic Gadsden flag.

American Barrels is growing alongside another Fort Myers based company - Ford's Garage. The restaurant chain now has four locations throughout Florida, all of which will be carrying American Barrels in the coming weeks. Additionally, American Barrels will be unveiling a dedicated bar at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida on Oct. 13 at the Panther's home opener.

The whiskey is 90 proof with an ABV of 45 percent, and is described as having a lingering caramel sweetness and light oaky finish.

Yappy Hour Halloween Costume Contest at Bell Tower Shops Oct. 14

Join the Gulf Coast Humane Society at the area's largest pet friendly social hour Friday, Oct. 14, from 6- 8 p.m. at The Bell Tower Shops. This month will be a howling good time with the Halloween pet costume contest.

Bring out your furry friend in their best Halloween costumes and with your $5 entry a chance to win first, second or third prize. The first 25 entries will be judge for the best costumes.

The Women's Council of Realtors, Fort Myers, will have a pet holiday photo shoot available this evening. The group will be offering three pet photos, one of each season (Halloween, Thanksgiving or Winter Holiday) for $100 or pick one for $40. Proceeds will be donated to GCHS.

GCHS will also have adoptable dogs available to meet potential new families and during the evening, T-shirts, coasters and magnets will be offered for sale and 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit the shelter.

A variety of vendors, including The Beach Dog, Valvoline, General Animal Hospital, PetSmart and Specialized Veterinary Services will be in attendance for the evening's festivities, which will include music provided by the Bell Tower Shops.
