Winners announced for Science and Engineering Fair

Approximately 300 students from Lee, Collier and Charlotte counties competed at the regional Thomas Alva Edison Kiwanis Science and Engineering Fair at Alico Arena, Florida Gulf Coast University.

More than 30 college scholarships, prizes, trophies, ribbons and lots of Sony Electronics products will be awarded to those students who excelled at the Kiwanis Science and Engineering Fair.

Winners from Lee County Public Schools include:

Grand Award Winners limited to the 30 students selected to compete at State Science Fair, all of whom received academic scholarships to FGCU (scholarship value of $2,500 each or $75,000 total); the top four (4) senior division projects go on to International Science Fair. (Also included is the scholarship winner from the Southwest Florida Community Foundation, valued at $4000.)

* Morgan Barkhurst, North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts, 7th grade, Project: BPA Free? Let's See!

* Conor Dougherty, Cape Coral High, 9th grade; project: The Effect of Increased Ocean Acidification on the Dissolution of Coral and Oyster Shells

* David Taschyan, Dunbar High, 11th grade, project: Magnetic Vortex

* Leah Rison, Trafalgar Middle, 7th grade, Project: Cool Cop?

SRO Winners 30 students were selected to attend the Summer Research Opportunity at FGCU (scholarship value of $400 each or $12,000 total)

* Lisa Dong, Lehigh Acres Middle, 8th grade, Project: Sherlock: A Study in Colors

* Ania Dziarnowski, Diplomat Middle, 7th grade, Project: The Power of Light

* Gabrielle Massaro, North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts, 7th grade, Got Milk?

* Sierra Edelstein, Gulf Middle, 7th grade, project: The Pearl of the Ocean: Can Eastern Oysters Affect Water Quality in Estuaries?

* Claire Schreiber, Diplomat Middle, 8th grade, project: Organisms Found in the Stairwell

* Erin Altman, The Alva School, 8th grade, Acid Reflux (not Ph), Alkalinity
