Things to Do

* Cape Coral Sail and Power Squadron

The Cape Coral Sail and Power Squadron wants everyone to have their boat in good working order before they hit the open water. To do this will cost the boater nothing.

Free confidential vessel inspections will be provided by the Cape Coral Sail and Power Squadron on Jan. 30, 31 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Cape Harbor and Tarpon Point Marina. This free service is a way to help keep Lee county boaters safe.

No appointment is necessary. The vessel safety check verifies that each boat has the required equipment to comply with the law and that it is in working order.

The Power Squadron has been offering this free service for the past 50 years. With over 60,000 boaters in Lee county there are many boaters that we can benefit from this service.

Vessels that pass the review receive a sticker that enables the Coast Guard and any other agency to know that it has been inspected.

If the boater would prefer to have us come to their dock they can call the Cape Coral Sail and Power Squadron at 239-549-9754 or go on line at and request a vessel safety check.

The Cape Coral Sail and Power Squadron and the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the only groups that offer this service for free.

The Power Squadron is a national organization dedicated to boating safety, by offering many boating classes from the basic to advanced. Our goal is keep people safe on the water as a service to the community.

* Democratic Party of Lee County annual Gala

This Saturday, Jan. 30, The Democratic Party of Lee County will host its annual Gala - Winter Extravaganza, at the Harborside Event Center in Downtown Fort Myers, featuring keynote speaker, Congressman and U.S. Senate candidate Alan Grayson.

The gala is the largest fundraising event each year hosted by the Democratic Party, and this year features emcee Desmond Meade, state director of the Live Free Campaign. The annual event is a celebration for local supporters and activists featuring dinner, dancing, silent auction and lively speakers.

"We're excited to feature 'Congressman With Guts', Mr. Grayson, and Mr. Meade this year, both very entertaining speakers," said Yoseph Tedros, the chairman of the Democratic Party of Lee County in a prepared statement. "Anyone who's heard or knows Mr. Meade, knows he's a delight with a rich sense of humor, and Congressman Grayson is sure to be a thrill for his always gutsy take on Washington politics and straight to the point opinions with a touch of humor." Tickets to the event are available at
