* Mobile Vet Center available for Veterans and Families Nov. 3

A Mobile Vet Center will be available at the Southwest Florida Military Museum, 4820 Leonard Drive, Cape Coral, on Nov.3, The MVC will be available from 9 a.m. 1 p.m. A free lunch will be served to all veterans who visit the museum at 11 a.m.

Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) MVCs provide readjustment counseling and information resources to Veterans across the country. Like community based Vet Centers, MVCs focus on services that help Veterans make the difficult transition between military and civilian life.

Services provided include counseling for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Military Sexual Trauma, bereavement counseling, marriage and family counseling, and resources like VA benefits information and suicide prevention referrals. All services onboard the MVC are confidential and provided at no cost to the Veteran and family members. Veterans and family members interested learning more about services provided by the Vet Center are encouraged to attend the event or contact Scott Hartford, Veteran Outreach Specialist, at 239-652-1863. * 4th Annual Military Appreciation Day

In honor of our military troops and their families, the Military Support Program of Lee Memorial Health System will take part in the fourth annual Military Appreciation Day on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First Christian Church, 2061 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers.

"This day is about acknowledging what our veterans have done for us. It's about making sure they have what they need. It's our turn to take care of them," said Kim Gaide, Coordinator of the Military Support Program of Lee Memorial Health System.

All military and their families are welcome to join in the festivities, which will begin with an opening ceremony. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, as well as daycare services (with a reservation), allowing you freedom to enjoy some of the many activities while we sweat the small stuff. Shop the free PX, receive assistance with VA benefits, health screenings, job opportunities, colleges and universities, and more.

Businesses and organizations who have stepped up for this event are: Lee Memorial Health System Military Support Program; First Christian Church, Lee Sar, Prudential Financial at the Forum, Victor Paul Tuchman Post 400; Jewish War Veterans; Vietnam Veterans of America; Firebase #594; First Christian Church; Veterans of the Glen; Hearts and Homes for Veterans, Inc.; American Red Cross; and American Legion Post #38.

* Butterfly Conference

Butterfly enthusiasts, gardeners, master gardeners and landscape designers are invited to attend the UF/IFAS Lee County Extension 15th annual Butterfly Conference.

The conference offers classes starting at 8:30 a.m. and butterfly garden tours in the afternoon Saturday, Nov. 7, at Hickory Hammock Native Tree Farm, 13321 Peace Road in east Fort Myers. The conference also features exhibitors and vendors of plants that offer food and habitat for butterflies.

* 'Phlockers' fund raiser to benefit Children's Hospital

On Sunday, Nov. 1, The Southwest Florida Parrot Head Club will be hold its annual fundraising event to welcome fellow Phlockers from all over the country as they make their pit-stop in Southwest Florida on their annual pilgrimage to Key West for the Parrot Head Meeting of the Minds. The club also will also celebrate its "coming of age" birthday, as the Club turns 21 this year! All proceeds will benefit the Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida. Last year, the club raised over $1000 in one day from this event -?this year they are hoping to double their donation to $2000! The event will be held at the Paradise Tiki Hut Bar & Grille, 1502 Miramar Street in Cape Coral. This is an all-day event that starts at noon and will include live musical entertainment throughout the day, with raffles, prizes, games and trivia to keep everyone entertained all day long. The Paradise Tiki Hut is adjacent to the Dolphin Key Resort, and there is a pool on the premises for all Tiki Hut guests to enjoy. Everyone is invited to attend this family-friendly event!
