Hometown Fourth!

July 3, 2015
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

For the second year running, the city of Cape Coral Parks and Recreation Department has geared up to present the community's annual Independence Day bash, Red White & Boom!

As the event did under the years-long effort by the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral, this year's street party will feature live entertainment, plenty of food and drink vendors, the popular kids area and, of course, the biggest and best fireworks display in Southwest Florida.

And admission is still free -with a twist.

For those who would like to have prime seating, access to the Cat Country Party Pit for an "upclose stage experience" with headliner Chase Rice, it's $20. Meanwhile, all-you-can-ride admission to the Kid's Patriot Park is $5 per child with accompanying parents free if they don't ride the rides.

BOOM! will run from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. along Cape Coral Parkway from Del Prado Boulevard to the bridge, which will be closed from 4:30 a.m. July 4 to 3 a.m. July 5.

This year's Storm Smart Fireworks Spectacular - to feature more than 4,000 shells and a full music synchronized show - is scheduled to starts at 9:30 p.m., weather permitting.

For those looking to get an early start on the holiday fun, there are two major "early bird" events to help kick off the holiday.

For hard-core enthusiasts, the festivities begin with the Freedom 5K across the Cape Coral Bridge. Race registration starts at 6:30 a.m. and the race will start at 7 a.m. at the foot of the bridge. Runners can register for the race at the Fort Myers Track Club website: freedom5kcc.com. Sign-ups are welcome on the event day.

The Great American Picnic at Cape Harbour then provides a family-style lead-in to Boom! In addition to live entertainment, the festivities will include the always-popular Patriotic Pet Contest, a Water Balloon Tossing Contest for children 5 to 16 and a Watermelon Eating Contest.

The Great American Picnic runs from at 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 5703 Cape Harbour Drive.

Admission is free as is participation in the contests.

For information on additional area Independence Day events, including those on Sanibel, Fort Myers Beach and in Fort Myers, see the Lee County Shopper inserted with today's Breeze.

Have a very happy and safe hometown Fourth!
