Lots of options

November 27, 2014
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

Judging from the numerous and bulky sales fliers, "Black Friday" got an even earlier start this year with a plethora of Thanksgiving Day specials, door busters and one-day sales.

Today's paper confirms bargain hunters can enjoy both Black Friday and an extension of the heavy discount days through the weekend with retailers also counting on "Cyber Monday" to kick off a healthy round of on-line purchases for those who don't want to line up and fight the crowds at the stores.

Count us among the shoppers who love bargains.

With numerous stores - Belk, Kohl's, JCPenny, Sears, Bealls, H.H. Gregg, Sports Authority, Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot, Lowe's and Bed, Bath and Beyond and more - there's ample opportunity to do just that this side of the river and close by.

But bargains aren't limited to the major retailers.

Savvy quality-first shoppers and penny-pinchers alike know locally owned specialty shops and independent franchises are an additional shopping option.

Saturday is Small Business Saturday, a relatively new shopping holiday celebrating independents and small enterprises, which also hope to entice gift buyers as they begin their holiday push.

Last year, only this sales day's fourth event, more than 100 million shoppers found what they were looking for by adding smaller retail stores and shops to their Thanksgiving weekend rounds, according to American Express, the driving force for the sales holiday sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

In 2013, shoppers spent $5.7 billion at "local" stores and shops, up 3.6 percent from 2012, American Express reports.

As you put your shopping lists together, take a moment to consider what the Cape has to offer this holiday season: Ornaments and collectibles. Cookies, pastries and holiday breads. Special ingredients for once-a-year dishes, fresh local seafood, deli delights, and jars and tins for hand-made gift baskets. Holiday sweaters, cocktail dresses and heirloom-potential baby garb. One-of-a-kind jewelry, pricey and not. Plants, flowers, furnishings and incidentals that will be cherished long after the holidays have passed.

Our community's various retailers remain a virtual treasure trove of the unique and what's special.

There are a lot of shopping options out there and prices continue to be very competitive.

Whether you choose to shop at retailers big, small, or both, enjoy the search for the all the gifts on your shopping list.

And we invite you to check the Weekday and Weekend Breeze for fliers, inserts, circulars and special advertising guides, sections and pages. You will find lots more bargains in the weeks ahead.

Only 26 more shopping days to Christmas!
