The media: Judge & jury

August 28, 2014

To the editor:

The symbol of justice is depicted by Lady Justice. She holds in her right hand a set of balance scales. The blindfold she wears gives value to objectivity. In her left hand is a double edged sword supporting the concept of Reason & Justice. It is a most ancient symbol. Mankind has been ever on the quest to secure a fair decision making tribunal. We still search for this.

However, it appears to be tainted, in these times, by the awesome power of the media. It would benefit us all if the media, with presenting the facts of a situation not to pick the winner and loser without the benefit of a trial.

A case in point is the civil unrest in Ferguson, Mo. With the media constantly preaching about Mr. Brown being a "gentle giant", they would also consider the facts revealed by the video of him strong arm robbing a merchant. He then proceeds to pummel a police officer so violently that the officer suffered a broken eye socket. Gentle? I think not! But the media clings to the old mantra, "if it bleeds, it leads!" The media is one step away from declaring Mr. Brown a saint.

The public looks to the media for information of an event and they are met with disappointment. The lynching by the media begins as soon as the media can hang its hat on a phrase that will create the rope and incite the mob.

Truth and fairness is sacrificed to the god that sells air time and newspapers. It is a public event that shifts our focus away from other problems. In the words of Rahm Emanuel, the ex- White House Chief of Staff, "you never want a serious crisis to go to waste."

And so, the riots and looting in Ferguson serve the purposes of the White House as well. All the names were at the funeral, including President Obama! Not here the issue with illegals crossing the border.

Not this day the battles being fought in the Middle East. And lets us not forget the twenty or so ongoing investigations of scandals in this administration.

To all this, the media focuses on the killing in Ferguson, Mo.

There was no racism in this incident save that which was manufactured by the media. We witness an unwritten contract between the mob and the media, of cooperation but no less unholy in this devastation of the neighborhood in Ferguson, Mo.

Lady Justice may be blindfolded but what still remains is the missing moral force in our justice system.

And the media opens the veins of the mob.
