The Rev. Harold Popp, of Cape Coral, died peacefully on Sunday at Hope Hospice. Rev. Popp was pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church on Pine Island Road for nearly 20 years.

He emigrated to the U.S. from Yugoslavia following World War II, becoming an American citizen in 1960. He married Thelma Popp (nee Kellogg) in 1956. After graduating from Luther Seminary, Rev. Popp accepted calls to serve with various congregations, including stops in Baltimore, MD; Clearwater, Fla. and Trieste, Italy. During his "retirement" years, he served the German-American congregation of South Florida.

He is survived by his brother, Edgar; his son, Joel; his grandson, Alexander and his granddaughter, Elizabeth Scharpnick.

A memorial service will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church, 2691 NE Pine Island Rd., at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30.

He will be dearly remembered by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society and/or American Diabetes Association.
