Baker girls top city rival 3-0

Crosstown rivals, and the city's two oldest high school programs, collided in the volleyball season opening game Tuesday night with Ida Baker prevailing over Mariner in straight sets.

Devon Ramey smashed eight kills to go with five service aces and nine assists to lead the Bulldogs to a 25-10, 25-12, 25-9 victory. Ashley Vargas contributed eight kills and Kristina Kayatta six kills with 15 assists. Amanda Gross added four kills, five aces and one assist.

"We just saw them last week in the preseason classic," said Bulldogs coach Rene Van Horn. "We are trying to work on some new things, and there's a lot of work to do, but I'm excited about the possibilities."

Abby Love led the Tritons defensively with four blocks. The Tritons (0-1) make their home floor debut on Thursday against East Lee County.

Baker (1-0) hosts South Fort Myers on Thursday.

North Fort Myers 3, Cape Coral 0: Cape Coral put up a fight in its season opening match Tuesday only to drop a straight-set decision at North Fort Myers 25-8, 25-14, 25-12.

The Seahawks were led by Chelsea Thomas with 10 kills and six digs. Makenzie Buss contributed 16 digs to go with 27 service receives.

The Seahawks (0-1) travel to Island Coast on Thursday.

Boys Golf

At Palmetto Pine CC: Landon Weber of Fort Myers earned medalist honors at Tuesday's three-way match with a round of par 36, but Barron Collier (159) came away with a two-stroke victory over the Green Wave (161) and Ida Baker (169).

"Our top guys underachieved," said Baker coach Scott Conforte. "We played the back-nine which the guys haven't played very often. Just no leadership today."

The Bulldogs host South Fort Myers and Dunbar next Tuesday.

At Miramar Lakes CC: Austin Vecciarelli's round of 41 led Mariner (170) to victory Tuesday over Riverdale (180) and South Fort Myers, which did not earn a team score.

The Tritons (5-1) host Estero at Coral Oaks Tuesday.

At Magnolia Landing: Luke Farmer claimed medalist honors Tuesday with a score of 39 to lead Estero (164) to victory over North Fort Myers (212).

Nick Marchitto led the Red Knights in 48 strokes.

At Royal Tee CC: Kayla Poff's 1-over-par 37 led Cape Coral to a lopsided season-opening victory over Cypress Lake Tuesday.

The Seahawks participate in the North of the River Tournament Thursday at Herons Glen.
